What is the story of Michigan's birth as a land and a people? Most of Michigan's story is unwritten. It is almost entirely an American Indian story. At the end of the 19th century Michigan was still a rural state. Sixty percent of Michigan people still lived in rural areas. Farmers socialized with townspeople at schools and churches, opera houses, Masonic Temples, Grange Halls and Grand Army of the Republic halls.
