Program Overview

Civil Engineer/Technician Co-op Program

The Michigan Department of Transportation Civil Engineer/Technician Co-op Program is structured to provide students pursuing post-secondary education with work experience in state government that is relevant to their educational goals and objectives. In addition students provide an excellent source of rapidly trained help.

Intent

To employ undergraduate engineering or technology students on a continuing basis for approximately three to eleven months per year on construction projects in Michigan.

This Engineering organization supervises highway and bridge construction contracts throughout the State of Michigan. Contractors construct the projects, but you will join professional field staff who provide engineering and inspection services. We have a unique program for the student interested in Civil Engineering/Technology.

Employment Requirements
  • Open to all undergraduate students studying in the engineering and technology fields, with priority to Civil Engineering, Civil Technology, and Land Surveying.
  • First year: Students must have earned a minimum of 24 semester credits or 36 term credits before program entry, and held an overall GPA of 2.0.
  • Subsequent years: Returning students must show reasonable accumulation of credits, up to the maximum number of years allowed in the program (six years): Student must have earned at least the following number of credits for each returning year:
    • 2nd year - 36 semester credits or 51 term credits
    • 3rd year - 48 semester credits or 66 term credits
    • 4th year - 60 semester credits or 81 term credits
    • 5th year - 72 semester credits or 96 term credits
    • 6th year - 84 semester credits or 111 term credits
  • College Transcript (to be attached to the on-line application and to be provided before hiring).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Valid Driver's License.

The program may require a Certification in Federal Material Testing and Sampling Methods (involves passing a written and proficiency exam to be completed after hire).

Typical Work Assignments

You will assist in or perform construction staking and layout, inspection, record keeping, testing and other field engineering duties on construction projects. On the job training will be provided.

Work Schedule and Maximum Program Years

Your work period will be approximately three to eleven months per year with a maximum of six years, extending from January through December depending on the schedule of the individual school and state staffing needs.

The standard bi-weekly work period is 80 hours. Overtime is paid beyond 80 hours bi-weekly and 8 hours daily.

Salary

Minimum starting salary is $13.18 per hour. Salary is based on college credit hours earned. This pay rate became effective October 1, 2009.

Travel Expenses

As a condition of employment, you are expected to accept the initial assignment location of the season with no travel expense reimbursement. Subsequent transfers to locations more than 25 miles from the initial assignment location may make you eligible for travel expense reimbursement.

Locations

The assignment will be to a region office or transportation service center located anywhere in the state. However, most of the openings are in or near major population centers. We will try to assign you at or near your preferred location.
