1. Why am I required to have a permit for my vehicle/load?

Answer: Pursuant to Act #300 of the Public Acts of 1949, the Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC), transport permits are required for vehicles and loads that exceed the maximum legal limits established in the MVC. Transport permits are only issued for vehicles and loads which cannot reasonably be reduced in size or transported by other means. More detail regarding legal sizes and types of permits issued by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) can be viewed by linking to the informational guides below:

2. How do I determine if my vehicle/load is oversized or overweight?

Answer: Refer to these Online Resources:

3. What are the different types of permits?

Answer: There are two different types of permits available to individuals or companies to transport their vehicles/loads on state trunklines:

  • Single Trip Permits
  • Extended Permits

4. What are the differences between single trip and extended permits?

Answer:

Single:

  • Single trip permits may be issued for a five day period if so requested.
  • A single trip permit is valid for one trip only, but may be issued to include a return move.
Extended:
  • Extended permits may be issued on an annual basis and are issued based on the vehicle/load being transported, there are various categories of permits including;

Construction (Form 2282)

Miscellaneous (Form 2266)

Agricultural (Form 2270)

Pipe and pole (Form 2268)

Modular or Mobile Home (Form 2272)

5. Where can I acquire a single trip permit?

Answer: All single trip transport permits must be applied for electronically directly from the Michigan Department of Transportation.  This option requires that an account be opened with the MDOT Transport Permit Unit and that certain requirements be met including submitting a minimum number of permit applications per month.

The Michigan Permit Administration and Routing System Web (MIPARS) permit application software is a web based program that can be run on most computers using the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system.

You may also obtain a single trip permit through a permit service. These services submit permits electronically as described above, and then forward them onto their customers. These services charge a fee over and above the official cost of the permit. A list of permit services may be viewed by clicking on the following link:Permit Services and click here for a Transport Escort Company

A single trip permit may also be received by walking in to one of MDOT Region or Transportation Service Center(TSC) Offices.

6. Where can I obtain an extended permit?

Answer: Extended permits are issued through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Real Estate Division, Transport Permits Unit by mail only from the Transport Permit Unit office:

7. Once I apply for the single trip permit, what is the turn-around time for receiving it?

Answer: Electronically submitted single trip permits are usually issued within 1 to 4 hours. However, during extremely busy periods, processing may take more time. It is also important to note that if information submitted is not accurate or complete, you may be requested to resubmit your application, which will delay issuance. Therefore, MDOT recommends a permit be applied for a minimum of 12 business hours prior to the required movement. Single trip permits issued on a walk-in basis at any of the Region/Transportation Service Centers (TSC) offices are usually issued within an hour.

8. Once I apply for an extended permit, what is the turn-around time for receiving it?

Answer: Extended permits are usually issued within a 15 business day period from the time it is received by MDOT. However, in order to ensure you receive your new permit prior to the expiration of your existing permit, MDOT recommends submitting a renewal application a minimum of 30 days prior to expiration.

9. What is the cost of a single trip permit?

Answer: The cost of a Single Trip Permit is as follows:

  • $50.00 for oversize and overweight or overweight only

Answer: The cost to renew a pre-existing Extended Permit is as follows:

  • $50 for oversize and overweight or overweight only

11. What is the cost of a new extended permit?

Answer: The price of a new extended permit is pro-rated based on the month it is sent in.

12. What are your business hours?

Answer: Business hours for the Transport Permit Unit are as follows:
Monday thru Friday, 7:30 to 4:30

13. When would I have to use a permit service?

Answer:

Permit services are recommended when a customer requiring a single trip permit is not able to take advantage of direct electronic submission.  However, for a customer who only occasionally needs a permit, it may be most convenient to walk in to one of  MDOT's Transportation Service Centers (TSC's).  Or visit of the many privately owned    Permit Services. For travel originating from outside Michigan, a permit is required for any vehicle or object beyond legal limits prior to entering the state of Michigan.

14. Once I have my permit, are there conditions or restrictions that must be adhered to when transporting my vehicle/load?

Answer:Each permit includes appropriate conditions and restrictions based on the size and or weight of the movement.
See Form 2260A
Special Provisions, Conditions and Restrictions Governing Special Transportation or Building Moving Permits on State Trunk Lines.

15. Do you issue county permits?
