Federal-aid
Highways
Federal-aid highways are
defined in Title 23 of the United States Code,
section 101: "(5) FEDERAL-AID HIGHWAY." The term 'Federal-aid highway'
means a highway eligible for assistance under this chapter other than a
highway classified as a local road or rural minor collector.
Local roads and rural minor
collectors are among the categories within
National Functional Classification (NFC). All NFC categories are shown
on the NFC maps
Federal-aid
Systems
Federal-aid systems are defined
in Title 23, USC, at section 103: "For
the purposes of this title, the Federal-aid systems are the Interstate
System and the National Highway System."
In Michigan, highways on the
Interstate System are shown on the NFC maps
- on the map legend, look
for "Rural or Urban Interstate."

Federal-aid Eligible
All federal-aid highways and
all roadways which are on either of the
two federal-aid systems are federal-aid eligible.
In addition, federal law may
define other roadways as eligible for federal-aid. Thus,
although rural minor collectors are not defined as federal-aid highways
according to Title 23, they are federal-aid eligible under current
federal law for some programs.
