A $40 million investment to improve 9 miles of pavement on northbound and southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) between 18 Mile and 27 Mile roads in the communities of Sterling Heights, Shelby Township and Washington Township, Macomb County.
Included in the project is:
Replacement of the 26 Mile Road overpass above M-53 with the construction of two new roundabouts at the east and west ends of the new overpass;
Ramp reconfiguration at the M-53/23 Mile Road interchange, including the construction of a new entrance ramp from westbound 23 Mile Road to southbound M-53, and the removal of the southbound M-53 loop ramp exit to eastbound 23 Mile Road;
Shoulder reconstruction along the northbound and southbound lanes of M-53 from 18 Mile to 27 Mile roads; and
Culvert replacement and upgraded interchange lighting
For freeway resurfacing, two lanes will be maintained on M-53 via traffic shifts during peak travel periods (5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays). During non-peak weekday periods and all times on weekends, one lane will be maintained in each direction.
26 Mile Road over M-53 will be closed and detoured from March 13 until Sept. 13 with detours posted for freeway and local traffic.
At selected stages of the project, crews will close the exit and entrance ramps to and from M-53 to 26 Mile Road. Traffic will be routed off M-53 at 27.5 Mile Road to Van Dyke Avenue to access 26 Mile Road.
At selected stages of the project, crews will close the southbound M-53 exit and entrance ramps at 23 Mile Road. Freeway traffic will be routed to M-59 to Schoenherr Highway to access 23 Mile Road.
