Green Purchasing

From cleaning supplies to pool chemicals, from sidewalk de-icer to boiler additives, from shop class to the chemistry lab, students, faculty and staff come in contact with chemicals on a daily basis.   Green purchasing, also call Environmentally Preferred Purchasing, calls for buying products that have a reduced environmental impact while maintaining the same quality and performance. Green products have some of the following attributes:

  • Non-toxic (or less toxic)
  • Minimal Disposal Impacts: Recyclable Product and Packaging, no hazardous material disposal
  • Recycled content (post-consumer)
  • Minimal packaging
  • Energy Efficient
  • Can be reprocessed or reused
  • More durable
  • Safer for students, employees, and the environment

Procurement policies, measures, or preferences, that specify environmentally preferable products and services can spur manufacturers to: create less toxic products, use recycled-content, design for recycling/reuse, consume less energy or water, or minimize waste. Procurement preferences can provide an immediate market for environmentally and socially responsible products.
